Equal vs. Equitable Financial Planning?

Please visit my Videos page for more videos.

These are our kids. Little Miss Cricket is the gray one: shy, timid, calm, sometimes quiet- she can be very independent. The little white one here is Mr. Shayney.  He thinks he's the pack leader of our family; he protects me.  He's always at my side or in my lap.  I treat the two of them equally.  They get the same food, the same treats.  We walk together, we ride in the car together; they even sleep together in the same crate.  I treat them equally- well, pretty much so.  When he looks at me like that, don't you think he gets an extra little treat?  Sure, he does.  And when she looks at me with her little soulful eyes, she gets some extra pampering.

Equally? Maybe equitably.

When you go to your attorney, you're going to have documents that reflect what you want - within the law of course.
But defining what you want isn't so easy.  I spend a lot of time with my clients talking about what they want; how it's going to play out; and how you, your family, your friends, your charities will be affected.  We play a lot of “what if's,” so that by the time you - or we - go to your attorney, you are able to articulate clearly what it is that you want. Then we all work together as a team to pull it together - to make sure it can happen.

For some of my clients, I'm going to be handling their financial affairs when they're not able to, or when one of them dies.  It's because some of them don't have family, or no one close by.  Or maybe they don't have someone close by they can trust, or maybe they just don't want to pick out one child and favor that child over the others.  From my perspective, I watch how all of this plays out.

Do you want to treat them equally?
Do you want to treat them equitably?

Let's talk about that.

I'm here to help you sort through the many issues that affect your financial well -being.
